Liverpool forward Divock Origi is set for a scan on an ankle injury picked up against Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Belgian international was forced off the field in the first half of the 3-1 victory after a collision with Magpies’ forward Miguel Almiron.

Jurgen Klopp confirmed after the game to Sky Sports that the 24-year-old was in really good shape and hopeful of no serious damage.

“Unfortunately Divock twisted his ankle early in the game, and had to come off,” he said.

“We all hope it’s not that serious, or that he could’ve played on, which is hopefully a sign that it’s not that serious.”

“He’s having a scan, he’s in really good shape though and hopefully they’ll find it’s okay.”

Origi’s replacement Roberto Firmino played a major part in the Reds’ victory as the Brazilian assisted two goals for Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

OPINION

It was a surprise that Origi was even involved from the start against Newcastle so he shouldn’t be a massive miss if he set for a spell on the sidelines. The Belgian did reiterate his importance to Klopp’s side last season in the Champions League, but the performance of Firmino more than proved the Brazilian is levels above his fellow forward. The initial suggestion is that despite being forced off, the problem doesn’t look too serious for Origi – who will be crossing his fingers after making his first breakthrough to the starting line up. The 24-year-old only completed a single shot in the game against Newcastle and failed to create any chances according to WhoScored, and Klopp will definitely have been expecting more. Injury or not, a place on the bench is waiting for Origi, who needs to take note of Firmino’s performance for future chances given to him in the starting line up.
