Michael Owen has claimed that Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer was inches away from signing for Liverpool.

The former Magpies’ player admitted he remembered the Premier League record-goalscorer tried everything to try and leave St James’ Park after Sir Bobby Robson placed him on the bench.

The long-standing feud between the two continued as Owen went on to question Shearer’s loyalty to Newcastle during his time at the club.

Owen made the claim on his personal Twitter account after Shearer directed a pretty harsh dig at the striker he revealed he hated his time in the North East.

“Not sure you are as loyal to Newcastle as you make out mate,” he wrote.

“I distinctly remember you being inches away from signing for Liverpool after Sir Bobby Robson put you on the bench. You tried everything to get out.”

OPINION

There is no doubting that the signing of Shearer could have taken Liverpool to the next level. The former Newcastle man still remains the record scorer in the Premier League with 260 goals, miles ahead of the second-placed scorer Wayne Rooney who managed 208 [Premier League]. The feud between Shearer and Owen continues to drag on despite the latter claiming in his new book as quoted by the Chronicle that they used to be good friends early on in their professional careers. That feud looks to have hit boiling point on Tuesday, with Owen’s suggestion that Shearer wasn’t as loyal as he makes out to be surely a big shock to many fans of both Newcastle and Liverpool, with Reds’ fans now thinking what if? It is hard to know what is the truth and what isn’t, but if Liverpool did complete the signing of Shearer that could have been the deciding factor that could have secured them their first-ever Premier League title – something they’re still hunting for to this day.
