Sam Allardyce has hailed Liverpool midfielder James Milner, describing the veteran as “unbelievable”.

The 33-year-old scored a late winner from the penalty spot against Leicester City on Saturday afternoon, and former England manager Sam Allardyce has been quick to praise him for his immense experience.

Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: “Unbelievable. What a man.

“A leader, a dedicated professional, capable of staying fit in his 30s.

“Massive character in terms of what he brings to the dressing room, and his example can embarrass the younger players cause they can’t keep up with him.”

OPINION

Milner has to be one of the most underrated English players of his generation. An unassuming workhorse, he has won respect and admiration pretty much everywhere he has played, and he is continuing that trend at Anfield too. At the end of the day, there are few players who could deliver the same kind of nerve and calm that he did against Leicester on Saturday, and while he may not be playing week in week out, he is still a very significant member of Jurgen Klopp’s side. His Whoscored rating of 6.37 may leave a lot to be desired this season, but it’s important to remember that he has been used sparingly, starting just twice. It is also important to recognise that Milner’s lowest Premier League rating for a season in a Liverpool shirt prior to this term has been a huge 6.91. That level of consistency is rare, and he deserves all the plaudits he is given.
