Gough remarks on PL title race

Darren Gough claimed Manchester City have looked better than any other team in the Premier League including Liverpool when “they’re on it.”

After Man City lost to Wolves on Sunday, the Reds go into the international break sat top of the Premier League, eight points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side.

However, while remarking on Liverpool being top of the league, Gough admitted it was strange the Reds were leading the way considering that Jurgen Klopp’s team have not been great in 2019, before revealing he thought Man City have looked the best Premier League side when firing on all cylinders.

“Liverpool have not been great this year, this is the strange thing,” said Gough on talkSPORT (16:13, Monday, October 7th).

“Man City when they’re on it have looked a million-dollar, they have looked better than any other team in the Premier League, haven’t they? When they’re on it.

“But they’ve slipped up twice now against two teams they would have been expected to win against.”

OPINION

Liverpool may have submitted some sub-par performances this year, see the 1-0 win over Sheffield United for more information, but what matters is that they’ve continually picked up three points this season. At the end of the day, the league isn’t won by the side that plays the best football or even has the best squad on paper, it’s won by the club who rack up the most points by consistently churning out positive results. Man City have scored seven more goals than Liverpool this season across the opening eight league games, but that isn’t what decides who is top of the table. So Gough’s claim about Man City may arguably be right, as at times Guardiola’s side have brushed teams away in style, however that isn’t going to help their trophy cabinet be filled if they keep slipping up. While you can see Gough wants to keep the idea that the race for the Premier League title is exciting, as talkSPORT want people to be interested enough to keep calling in, but as stands, the Reds have their fate in their own hands and all they need to do is keep up their winning ways. With an eight-point gap, Liverpool can even afford to lose both games to Man City and still finish first when all is said and done.
