Managing Liverpool is Steven Gerrard’s “dream” job, but the Kop legend still believes Jurgen Klopp is the right man for his former side, according to Rangers assistant manager Michael Beale.

Talk of Gerrard returning to Anfield has increased in recent times after Klopp himself suggested that the Champions League winning captain would be the ideal candidate to takeover in the dugout when he leaves, as per FourFourTwo.

And speaking to the Echo, Gerrard’s current number two has certainly hinted that a comeback is a possibility.

He said: “I don’t think Steven is looking too far ahead, it is a big job and obviously that is the dream – or rather, the aim – for him long term to manage the club.

“But I think Steven would say himself, right now, the best manager for Liverpool Football Club is Jurgen Klopp. Long may that continue.”

OPINION

It feels as if Gerrard returning to Liverpool is written in the stars. Undoubtedly, he is one of the biggest legends in the club’s history, and he is still universally adored by an ardent fanbase, who would no doubt have him back in a heartbeat. Obviously, nobody wants Klopp to leave anytime soon, and you would expect him to stay a while longer, but the reality is that the grinning German will have to say auf wiedersehen at some point, and when he does, you would struggle to find a more obvious or better suited replacement than Gerrard. Not only does he know the club inside out, but with every passing week his credentials as one of Britain’s best young managers grow and grow. So far he has averaged 2.03 points per game at Ibrox, as per Transfermarkt, and if he can be the man to deliver a long overdue league title, then he will be one of the hottest prospects in the game, and Liverpool would be lucky to have him back.
