Jamie Carragher has admitted that it could be “difficult” for Liverpool to match their points haul from last season as they aim to win their first Premier League title this term.

Liverpool won 97 points last season but failed to win the title due to Manchester City just about besting them at the top of the table.

Carragher reckons that if Liverpool can beat Man City when the two sides meet next week, that will put Jurgen Klopp’s side in pole position to finish top of the pile.

“They’ve started brilliantly, on the back of what they did last season in the Champions League. But it might be difficult to replicate what they did, in terms of the 97 points to almost win the Premier League,” Carragher told Sky Sports.

“At this moment, you’d probably have to say they’re slight favourites for the title. But I can’t help but think City will come back and go on a winning run.

“Both teams were in the same position last year and City came back at them. If Liverpool could win the City game, not just for the points, but psychologically, that would put them in a great position.

“In this moment, Liverpool are slight favourites, if they were to reach the international break on the back of two wins, that would put them nine points clear. They’d take some stopping then, they’d be big favourites.”

OPINION

Liverpool are in a good position at the moment but people need to stop talking about who are favourites and who is more likely to win the Premier League title when it’s not even November yet. The season is still young and a lot can happen between now and May. Yes, it does seem as though it’s between Liverpool and Manchester City, but who is to say that they can’t mess things up between them and Leicester go on a wild charge, or Chelsea’s great form continues? People shouldn’t be writing teams off just yet and they should not be saying that Liverpool will be favourites off the back of beating Manchester City. Liverpool still have to do that and it is going to be very tough for them because Pep Guardiola’s side is always up for the big matches. Liverpool failed to win the league last season based on their inability to beat the Citizens but even if they lose to them this term, it does not mean they won’t win the title.
