Liverpool have the advantage over Manchester United in the hunt to sign Red Bull Leipzig forward Timo Werner, according to Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles.

The transfer expert claimed that despite the Red Devils being on record that they want to sign a striker in the January transfer window, Liverpool remain in the driving seat.

Castles has reported that after it was suggested that the Reds had opened talks with Leipzig over the signing of Werner, that alongside being able to offer more attractive football in competitions such as the Champions League will give them the upper hand.

“They would have a significant advantage over Manchester United,” he said, as quoted by the Daily Star.

“They cannot offer anything like an attractive football prospect as Liverpool can.

“The choice for the player would be to go to a team who are struggling even to get into the places for a Europa League qualification never mind Champions League.”

OPINION

Given the state that the two clubs are currently in, it comes as no surprise that Liverpool could have a much bigger advantage over Manchester United. Any club that have reportedly open talks with a player and club already would have a better chance, but the fact that the Reds are the current Champions League holders as well as topping the Premier League, they would have an advantage over nearly every club in the world this season of signing the brightest talents. Werner has also been reported by Ian McGarry to be very keen on joining Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp so it would take something quite special from elsewhere to turn his head moving forward. The 23-year-old is one of the hottest prospects in Europe at this moment and continues to find the back of the net. The Reds being able to secure his signature would put an end to all suggestions that they don’t have enough squad depth to consistently challenge for silverware.
