Former Liverpool and Aston Villa goalkeeper David James claimed the clash between two of his former sides in the EFL Cup quarter-finals was the standout tie of the round.

The former Reds and Villans shot-stopper helped draw the upcoming round of the tournament alongside Zoe Ball on her BBC Radio 2 breakfast show.

James reflected on his own career while giving his instant reaction to the draw by sharing how well he had done with both Villa and Liverpool in the competition during his playing days.

“The standout tie is Aston Villa versus Liverpool, I reached the semi-final with Aston Villa once and won the trophy with Liverpool back in 95 which doesn’t seem that long ago,” said James on BBC Radio 2 (8:54am, Thursday, October 31st).

OPINION

It’s a bit odd that James has dubbed Liverpool’s clash with Villa as the standout tie of the EFL Cup quarter-finals as it will hardly get pulses racing. After all, the fixture is going to happen on Saturday as the two sides are set to clash in the Premier League, so it’s hardly a rare occasion to see these teams go at it. When you consider Colchester United are going to get the opportunity to knock out Manchester United at Old Trafford while Oxford United may do the unthinkable and dethrone Manchester City, those ties seem more interesting to watch. Also while Liverpool’s bitter rivals Everton are struggling in the Premier League, their clash with Leicester City in the cup is very intriguing. The Toffees could prioritise the EFL Cup and throw everything they have at the Foxes, as winning the tournament may not only eventually end up saving Marco Silva’s job for the foreseeable future, it would end their extremely long-wait for silverware, so there is a chance they could knockout Leicester despite Brendan Rodgers’ side being in red-hot form. Then again maybe James just picked out Villa’s clash with Liverpool for an opportunity to speak about himself.
