Ian Holloway is certain that Steven Gerrard should be the next permanent manager at Liverpool once Jurgen Klopp’s successful reign at Anfield eventually comes to an end.

Gerrard is currently in his second season in charge of Scottish giants Rangers and after leading them to a second-place finish in his debut campaign at Ibrox last term, he and his side currently sit top of the Scottish Premiership standings.

Klopp’s contract at Liverpool does not expire until 2022 and while that is a long time away, Holloway has not shied away from discussing who could eventually replace the popular German in the Anfield hotseat.

And based on Frank Lampard’s return to Chelsea over the summer, the former Crystal Palace boss reckons that Gerrard would be the perfect fit at Liverpool.

“Steven Gerrard all day long,” said Holloway via his personal Twitter account on Tuesday. “Look at what Frank Lampard’s doing at Chelsea. I think Klopp is a legend but I think Stevie is too.”

OPINION

Most Liverpool fans would probably agree with Holloway. Although Gerrard has not exactly done much better or worse than what has been expected of him at Rangers, he has still steadied what was a very rocky ship and led the Light Blues to their highest finish in the Scottish top-flight since their 2012 financial crisis. Gerrard has also reached back-to-back Europa League group stages, which is arguably the most impressive achievement of his managerial career so far based on how poorly Rangers had performed in Europe before he started at Ibrox. Gerrard is a Liverpool man through and through, the fans will love him and there does not seem to be anyone out there who would be a better fit than him. However, we cannot forget that Klopp is there right now and Liverpool fans need to milk every moment of the Germans’ reign at Anfield because he will no doubt go down in history once his days on Merseyside are over and could be very hard to replace.
