Young Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is almost certain to be included in the match day squad for the clash with Arsenal on Wednesday, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that the Irishman is expected to be in the squad once again for the Carabao Cup clash, after starting between the sticks in the win over MK Dons in the last round.

However, with first choice ‘keeper Alisson now back to full fitness, the 20-year-old may have to settle for a spot on the substitute’s bench, with Adrian likely to start.

Kelleher made a number of impressive saves as the Liverpool Under-23s battled to a scoreless draw with their Blackburn Rovers counterparts on Saturday.

OPINION

The fact that Kelleher played against Blackburn is perhaps an indication that he won’t be in from the start against the Gunners on Wednesday. The Echo’s report states that the young Reds were extremely depleted on Saturday because many of their regular stars were training with the first team ahead of potentially featuring in the Carabao Cup clash. However, Kelleher obviously did play against Rovers. Perhaps, then, he is only going to be sat on the bench on Wednesday, with Adrian set to start. The Spaniard has seen his opportunities to do so diminish immensely since Alisson returned to fitness against Manchester United last weekend, meaning that manager Jurgen Klopp will likely give him an opportunity from the get-go against Unai Emery’s side. Kelleher could perhaps think of himself as unfortunate if that is how it plays out, given that he performed well in the last round of the competition. As per WhoScored.com, he received a rating of 6.94 for the game, more than respectable for a ‘keeper who didn’t have to do much, but who had to remain alert throughout.
