Liverpool coach Barry Lewtas has been blown away by the progress that Reds youngster Curtis Jones has made in recent times.

The 18-year-old put in an impressive performance for the senior side against MK Dons last Wednesday, before scoring for the Under-23s against their Arsenal counterparts on Saturday.

Lewtas has been very impressed: “Curtis plays for the first team, gets man of the match, then a few days later scores twice for the U23s,” he told the Liverpool Echo.

“A fantastic week for him, it’s only good for his development. Curtis was captain for the first group game at Napoli, and I was impressed by how mature and responsible he was, not just on the pitch but around the place. He was a leader when we were there.”

OPINION

There’s no doubt that Jones is someone who the Reds faithful should be keeping their eyes on moving forward. He was electric against MK Dons, and showed no signs of stage fright on the big stage. His terrific performance has kind of been lost amidst the excitement surrounding Harvey Elliott’s equally impressive display, but the 18-year-old was very good against the League One side in his own right. The statistics show that, as well. As per WhoScored.com, the teenager made 77 passes against the Dons, posting an impressive pass success rate of 90%. He also took on four shots, with half of them finding the target. He embarked on two dribbles and was fouled once, while he was dispossessed twice. So keeping the ball is the next thing to improve. His passing is obviously tremendous, but he has to avoid being tackled, as well, rather than simply steering clear of giving the ball away with a slack pass. However, there’s no doubt that Jones is one to watch.
