Liverpool embarked on a rather close to home scouting mission on Wednesday night when they watched Red Bull Salzburg midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, according to Calcio Mercato.

The Italian outlet reported that the Reds were watching the Hungarian take on their own team in the topsy-turvy 4-3 Liverpool win at Anfield.

The 18-year-old started the Champions League clash, and has been a regular contributor for the Austrian outfit so far this season, scoring three goals and grabbing three assists in all competitions [Source: Transfermarkt].

Plenty of European royalty are also keeping an eye on the youngster, with Arsenal, Juventus and Inter Milan all watching him on Wednesday as well.

OPINION

If Liverpool really did watch Szoboszlai on Wednesday then they no doubt will have made the short trip home from Anfield slightly disappointed with what the teenager produced. He played 70 underwhelming minutes before being replaced, and wasn’t really able to influence proceedings to any meaningful degree. As per WhoScored.com, the Hungarian had one shot, which was off target, and produced only 37 passes, with a below par pass success rate of 67.6%. He hit four long balls forward, but none of them found their man, although he did make two key passes. However, he was dispossessed five times and had two unsuccessful touches, while his WhoScored rating for the match of 6.26 was poor. Clearly he is the not the finished article, which you wouldn’t expect for an 18-year-old anyway. There is obviously potential there, but the level of interest in from elsewhere probably means that the Reds will let this one lie for the time being.
