Liverpool face the prospect of being without Joel Matip for the next six weeks, according to the London Evening Standard.

The newspaper claims that Matip, 28, might miss Liverpool’s next 10 fixtures after suffering a setback in his recovery from a knee injury.

It is understood that among those 10 matches are clashes against Manchester City, Everton and every remaining Champions League group stage game.

Liverpool are going to miss Matip. The 28-year-old has not only been solid at centre-back for the Reds this season, he has also bettered Virgil van Dijk in a lot of his performances. According to stats by WhoScored, Matip has averaged more tackles, interceptions and clearances as van Dijk has in the Premier League this term. Matip has also been a beast to contend with in the air by winning more aerial duels per league match than the Netherlands international. Joe Gomez has struggled to get game-time due to Matip’s form but he, and Dejan Lovren, will now have to fill in for the coming weeks while Matip is out injured. Matip had this chance to impress last season while Gomez was injured so it will be interesting to see how Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order at centre-back looks once the Cameroon international recovers from his latest setback. One thing for sure though is that no one wanted Matip to miss any matches based on his displays this term.
