Jermaine Pennant has claimed that Liverpool are a bigger club than Arsenal as two of his former sides prepare to take each other on in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.

Liverpool welcome Unai Emery’s side to Anfield in the hopes of booking their spot in the quarter-finals of the competition, where they could potentially face teams like Manchester City, Colchester or Oxford United.

Ahead of the match, Pennant was asked which of the two clubs was the biggest and based on their history and the fact they are reigning European champions, he has opted for the Merseyside giants.

“The biggest club out of the two would be Liverpool,” Pennant said, as shown via talkSPORT’s official Twitter account on Wednesday.

“You’ve got to look at the achievements and trophies.

“Also now, they’re European champions as well.

“Don’t get me wrong, Arsenal are a massive club but I’ll say Liverpool pips it.”

OPINION

How can anyone disagree with Pennant? Arsenal have a great history and have won more league titles in the last few decades, but if we are going to talk about history, no one in English football compares to Liverpool. No English club comes close to match the six European title and only Manchester United can boast more league titles than the Reds. When you talk about the biggest club in England, it is always been between Man United and Liverpool, no one else can realistically enter that debate. Arsenal and Chelsea are the two teams who should scrap it out to be called the third-biggest club in England, but they are still some way off of Liverpool and Man United. At the moment, Liverpool are the best clubs in the country and in Europe. Being the biggest does not always matter. It’s being the best that does matter and no one can argue that with Liverpool top of the table, they are better than anyone else in the country.
