Jordan Henderson deserves his place in the England starting XI because he is a “leader”, according to The Athletic journalist Jack Pitt-Brooke.

The Liverpool skipper has been a key member of Gareth Southgate’s side throughout the duration of his tenure, and reliable reporter Pitt-Brooke believes that should continue for the foreseeable future.

Writing in a Q&A for the Athletic, when asked about England’s best lineup, he said: “Henderson is a leader and driving force.”

OPINION

It’s nice to hear Henderson get some praise for once. It feels as if so often he is overlooked by pundits and journalists, and to be fair, in some respects you can understand why. The Anfield skipper is not as eye-catching as some of his more attacking teammates for both club and country, and so often he is tasked with doing the dirty work that nobody notices, but the fact of the matter is that his energy and willingness to battle are a key foundational element for both Liverpool and England. Stats don’t always flatter Henderson, and his Whoscored rating of 6.61 so far this season leaves a bit to be desired, but his presence and work ethic make him a vital component of any side he plays in.
