Alan Shearer has included Liverpool defender Joel Matip in his Premier League team of the week.
The Cameroonian starred in his side’s 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday, a result that helped the Reds maintain their 100% record in the league so far this season.
And speaking about that performance to the Premier League, Shearer said: “Was magnificent.
“A great reader of the game, a calming influence in defence, and he produced some excellent passes out from the back too.”

OPINION
Matip has been superb so far this season, and is fully deserving of his place in Shearer’s team of the week. The 28-year-old has been a rock at the heart of the Liverpool defence, and has been so impressive that he has arguably outperformed Virgil Van Dijk. So far this term, he has made more tackles, more interceptions, and more clearances than the Dutchman, as per Whoscored, as well as registering a higher average match rating. In fact, Matip’s 7.62 makes him the highest rated defender in the Premier League at the moment, as well as the eighth highest rated player in the division overall. He has been brilliant so far this term, and don’t be surprised to see a lot more accolades and plaudits chucked his way in the coming months.
