OPINION
Numerous Liverpool supporters have been raving over the performance of Reds midfielder Fabinho in the first half against Genk on Wednesday night, and it’s no surprise. The 26-year-old reigned supreme during the opening period in Belgium, although he wasn’t given much defensive help from the two rather attack-minded central midfielders playing alongside him. Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are both much more comfortable rampaging forward than they are chasing back, and that was evident in the first half, here. We did see Fabinho’s own offensive abilities early on, though, when he unlocked the Genk defence by finding Oxlade-Chamberlain with a beautiful pass, from which the England international turned and drove the ball into the back of the net to give Jurgen Klopp’s team the lead. Many midfielders would have taken an easy pass out wide to one of their full backs, but Fabinho decided to play it forward and he split the Genk defence in the process. He truly was terrific in the opening stanza.
