Many Liverpool fans were left thanking Tottenham after the Premier League’s official Twitter account uploaded a clip from the Reds’ 2017 clash with Spurs in the Premier League. The clip is from the game where Tottenham beat the Reds 4-1, with Harry Kane stealing the headlines due to grabbing a brace, and many Liverpool supporters believe this heavy loss helped transform Jurgen Klopp’s team for the better. While it’s hard to pick out one game that triggered the Reds’ recent success, the heavy defeat courtesy of Spurs did seem to act as a wake-up call. After all the Reds suffered a defeat despite having more shots on target than their opponents and dominating possession due to their defence being error-prone (Source: BBC Sport). The BBC’s match report for the game even highlights that Dejan Lovren would be singled out for errors and that even with the pairing of Joel Matip and Joe Gomez at the back, the Reds looked a shambles. It also highlights how the Reds failed to sign Virgil Van Dijk as a potential reason for why the Reds were suss at the back, and given that Liverpool went on to spend big on getting the Dutchman in January, maybe this performance convinced them they just couldn’t cope without the centre-back being on the books. Given that Van Dijk has played a key part in the Reds winning the Champions League and competing for the Premier League title, maybe this game is important in hindsight.
