If you’re going to win silverware, then you have to be prepared to overcome a few obstacles along the way. Whether that means sneaking past stubborn opponents or winning whilst missing key players, it is almost impossible for a top side to go the length of a season without some kind of hiccup. Arguably, Liverpool have already had a pretty big one this season. Losing Alisson Becker in the opening game of the Premier League was less than ideal, but because Adrian has stepped into the breach so ably, his absence has barely been felt. Now, however, the Reds have another bump in the road to navigate, with Jurgen Klopp confirming on Tuesday that Joel Matip picked up a knock in the 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Saturday, as shared via the Reds’ official Twitter. That means that the Cameroonian will not feature against RB Salzburg on Wednesday, which is a blow considering how well he has been performing thus far this season. Matip has been so solid at the heart of defence that he has registered a Whoscored rating of 7.62. To put that in some context, it makes him the highest rated defender in the top flight right now, and the eight highest player overall. Joe Gomez will probably deputise for the 28-year-old against the Austrians, but given Matip’s form this season, those are big, big shoes to fill.
