OPINION
Of all the things Liverpool fans would have expected to see on Monday, Georginio Wijnaldum being nominated for the Ballon d’Or was most likely not one of those. The Dutch international was selected for the list alongside some of his teammates including Sadio Mane, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Virgil van Dijk. The midfielder has had a number of standout moments for the Reds which could have seen him nominated for those things alone, none more so than his two goals in the Champions League semi-final against Barcelona to help his side to the final in Madrid. Wijnaldum has stepped up this season in the heart of midfield and has continued to shine for Jurgen Klopp, and although he is likely to be nowhere near the eventual winner of the award, this nomination is a massive step in the right direction for the Reds’ ace. Liverpool confirmed the nomination on their official Twitter account and many Reds’ fans reacted and showered the Dutchman in praise, with the majority claiming he is massively underrated.
