OPINION

In a side as imperious as Liverpool’s, it’s almost strange to think that there could be anybody who fans disapproved of, but it feels as if time and time again supporters jump on Jordan Henderson’s back. The captain started in a midfield three alongside Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldum in the 4-3 win over RB Salzburg at Anfield, and many supporters felt that he was the weak link in that setup. Certainly, it was he who gave away the ball in the build up to the Austrians’ first goal, and he came in for a fair amount of stick on social media in the aftermath. This isn’t the first time he has come in for some flak this term either, as per Live4Liverpool, with the skipper feeling the heat against Norwich City.  To an extent though, you have to feel sorry for him. Is it that he is such a bad player, or is it that he is surrounded by superlative talents who are better equipped to catch the eye? Of course, he is far from perfect. His pass success rate of 79% this season leaves a fair bit to be desired, while his average of 0.7 key passes his hardly earth-shattering, as per Whoscored. But it’s important to remember that Henderson is designed to be the workhorse of this team. He is meant to put in the hard yards so that those around him can receive the plaudits, and nine times out of 10, he does exactly that brilliantly. He’s not flawless, but he’s not as bad as people make out.
