OPINION

Georginio Wijnaldum has been consistently slated by some Liverpool supporters on Twitter for his performances this season so it is no surprise to see that there were certain fans out for blood yet against on Wednesday night. It was by no means a good performance by the Reds when they won 4-3 against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg at Anfield in the Champions League, but some of the reaction to what went on in the 90 minutes would make it sound as though they actually lost the game and were dumped out of the competition. According to stats by WhoScored, Wijnaldum completed 100 per cent of his passes against Salzburg before he was substituted off in the 64th minute. He also completed two out of his two attempted dribbles – only Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah completed more for the Reds – and was not dispossessed once by an opposing player. Wijnaldum kept the ball very well. He did not do too much creative work with the ball having failed to complete a key pass, but the £75,000-a-week [Spotrac] midfielder was still someone who played the role he set out to do and at the end of the day, helped the Reds win the three points. There’s no need for this massive drama.
