COMMENTARY

Many Liverpool fans were left convinced on Tuesday that Reds assistant manager Pep Lijnders was the ideal choice to succeed Jurgen Klopp if the German boss opts to leave Anfield. Klopp has previously hinted that he may leave his post as Liverpool manager once his contract expires in 2022, as per Sky Sports, and it seems some Liverpool supporters believe that Klopp’s influence should remain on the club once he leaves by having Lijnders succeed him.  One claimed the Dutchman was the perfect option because he would continue to implement similar tactics to Klopp, with one even convinced that the German was grooming his assistant to take over from him. This isn’t the first time the idea of Lijnders being Liverpool’s next manager has been mooted as Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst poured doubt on Lijnders succeding Klopp as the 36-year-old didn’t fare well as NEC Nijmegen manager last year. It’s easy to see why the reporter has his doubts Lijnders is the right man as he only oversaw 22 games at the Dutch club before returning to Anfield, as per Transfermarkt, and that hardly spells success. However, what is clear, is that if Liverpool did take a gamble on Lijnders, he’ll have the fans’ backing.
