It feels almost predestined that Steven Gerrard will one day become Liverpool manager.

The ex-Kop skipper is still universally adored at Anfield, and after spending time working in the Reds’ youth setup, and with him now in the midst of a successful spell at Ibrox with Rangers, his credentials as a manager continue to rise and rise.

In fact, Jurgen Klopp has even gone as far as to suggest that Gerrard should replace him as Liverpool manager when he does finally decide to move on, as per FourFourTwo.

Evidently, that won’t be for a while yet, but if and when it does happen, you would have to expect Gerrard to be a leading candidate for the vacancy left behind.

And the likelihood of the 39-year-old being available for a possible switch is surely increasing, as pointed out by former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “Steven’s not going to stay at Rangers forever, managers don’t stay at clubs forever – that’s not me saying he’s going to get the sack or move on but that’s just a fact, managers move on and Steven, like his playing career, will have a long one as a manager, I’m sure.”

Now, obviously, Robinson doesn’t have some kind inside track on Gerrard’s future plans, but you’d be amazed if he’s wrong.

No slight on Rangers, who in their own right are a massive club, but knowing that Klopp views Gerrard as his successor, and assuming that he won’t end his career at Ibrox, it’s hard not to view his time in Scotland as something of a stepping stone.

It could well be a few years away, and anything can change in football at the drop of a hat, but don’t be surprised to see Gerrard prowling the touchline on Merseyside after these latest comments from Robinson.
