Darren Bent has hailed Liverpool youngster Curtis Jones, claiming that he can go on to become “the one” for the Reds.

The teenage starlet starred in his side’s thrilling Carabao Cup victory over Arsenal in midweek, and scored the winning penalty in a shootout in front of the Kop.

And Sky Sports pundit Bent is expecting big things from him in the future.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: ““I like Curtis Jones, I like him. He came one and he was really composed, scored the winning penalty, he set up Origi for one of the goals.

“He really impressed me in the last game against MK Dons, I know a lot of people are talking about Harvey Elliot and about how young he is but for me that Curtis Jones, he is the one. He was comfortable on the ball, didn’t show any fear and that was a really good sign.

“In a couple of years he’ll be one of the main names in the Liverpool midfield.”

OPINION

It’s hard not to be impressed by Jones to be fair. The youngster showed nerves of steel to tuck away his penalty against the Gunners, and after such a riveting and pulsating match, nobody would have blamed him if the pressure had gotten to him. Beyond that, however, he put in a brilliantly assured display in the centre of the park, and as Bent pointed out, his assist for Divock Origi showed signs of a player mature beyond his years. To be playing as he is at the age of 18 is something special, and you wouldn’t bet against him getting better and better as times goes by. The Reds are a real hotbed for emerging young talent at the moment, but out of everybody, Jones is right up there with the most exciting.
