Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has taken to Twitter to praise Raheem Sterling for his reaction to Joe Gomez being booed by England fans last night.

The Anfield defender came off the bench during the 7-0 win over Montenegro, but was met with a disappointing reaction from the Wembley crowd.

This came in the aftermath of an altercation between himself and Sterling during the Three Lions’ preparation for the match that the Manchester City winger has since taken full responsibility for.

And writing on social media after the game, Sterling once again reiterated that he was to blame for the confrontation, and that the reception Gomez received was condemnable.

Responding to that post, Fowler wrote: “Class… and genuinely sincere”.

OPINION

The way that Gomez was treated last night was simply unacceptable. The Liverpool man has done nothing wrong in this situation, and yet somehow is still being reviled as the perpetrator by some England fans. Quite frankly, it doesn’t compute. Sterling has admitted that he caused the issue, and after a sincere and honest apology, plus the one game omission that Gareth Southgate decided to impose, that really should have been the end of the matter. Both players appeared to have moved on, and there really was no need to drag things out longer than they needed to be. Instead, however, what we got was a mindless section of the Wembley crowd jeering Gomez for no logical reason. How is that going to make him feel? What kind of supporter reacts like that? You would hope that it doesn’t get to the Kop ace too badly, and that it is a one-time thing, but honestly, the fact that it happened at all is bordering on disgraceful.
