Former Wales international Danny Gabbidon has praised Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for his performance against Genk on Tuesday.

The England international was drafted into the midfield to face the Belgian side and performed terrifically, netting the winning goal in the Reds’ 2-1 victory.

BBC pundit Gabbidon was very impressed by him: “Sharpest I’ve seen the Ox since his return,” he wrote on his personal Twitter account.

“All round game was good tonight.”

OPINION

Oxlade-Chamberlain was absolutely tremendous on Tuesday night, and it was his goal that made the difference in a game that was a hell of a lot closer than most people thought it would be. Jurgen Klopp’s team weren’t at their best, but they were professional and got the job done fairly easily in the second half. However, they needed a moment of magic to separate themselves from the Belgians, and it was Oxlade-Chamberlain who provided it. The 26-year-old received the ball in the box, spun and managed to direct a fierce effort right into the corner despite essentially standing on one leg at the time. He was fantastic, and the statistics demonstrate as much. As per WhoScored.com, the former Arsenal man managed a goal, three shots – two on target – three successful dribbles and five long balls forward. Furthermore, he posted a pass success rate of 87.8% on his way to a WhoScored rating of 8.12. As Gabbidon says, he was back at his sharpest on Tuesday.
