Juventus have admitted that they wouldn’t be able to afford a Liverpool player even if they wanted to sign one, according to The Athletic journalist Simon Hughes.

The reporter revealed that the Italian giants were at Anfield on Sunday, but were casting their eye over Tottenham playmaker Christian Eriksen, rather than anybody in a red shirt.

And Hughes went on to suggest via his personal Twitter account that the reason for their disinterest was enforced.

He wrote: “Juventus were watching Eriksen at Anfield on Sunday.

“When asked which Liverpool player they’d like to sign, an Italian club official said, ‘we couldn’t afford one.’”

OPINION

This speaks volumes as to how far the Reds have come under Jurgen Klopp. It wasn’t that long, in the grand scheme of things, that Liverpool were being picked clean of their top talent, with the likes of Luis Suarez going to Barcelona and Fernando Torres leaving for Chelsea. You could even argue that Phillipe Coutinho’s move to Barca, not two years ago, was a prime example of how far behind Europe’s absolute elite the Reds still were. Obviously, the Brazilian’s departure arguably worked out perfectly for Klopp, who was able to snap up Virgil Van Dijk and Alisson Becker shortly after to really give his side a boost in their silverware credentials, but in terms of reputation, at that specific moment in time, there was a gap to be closed. Now, however, not only do the Reds have the cream of the crop in terms of talent, they also have the power and status to fend off interested parties. Why would anybody want to leave Anfield right now? For the first time in an age, Liverpool hold all the cards.
