Former Liverpool stalwart Mark Lawrenson has delivered his prediction for his old team’s pivotal clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

The two top teams in the Premier League face off at Anfield, with league supremacy potentially on the line. Lawrenson, though, feels the Reds will ease to a 2-0 victory.

“I think Liverpool will win the league this year and they have shown us why in the past few weeks,” he wrote on the BBC Sport website. “If anyone gives them a problem they just seem to know how to solve it.

“I just don’t think City are at the same high level as last season. The little things are going against Pep Guardiola’s side, and some very small cracks are starting to appear, while Liverpool just seem to get stronger and stronger. Liverpool go nine points clear if they win, which is a lot. That is what I think will happen too.”

OPINION

Blimey, you’d never know Lawrenson used to play for Liverpool, would you?… He’s certainly got a bit of Scouse bias, here, but it’s still difficult to argue with what he’s saying here. As he says, the Reds simply keep finding a way to win. You can single out several games this season where they haven’t been at their best, but have found a way to win. Sheffield United, Leicester City, Aston Villa, even Genk on Tuesday night. Jurgen Klopp’s team weren’t particularly good in any of those matches, yet they came out victorious in every single one of them. However, he might be exaggerating City’s struggles just a bit. Yes, they’re probably not quite as solid as last season, but they are still excellent going forward and have coped pretty well with some devastating injuries. It’s going to be a very even game on Sunday, but perhaps Liverpool will edge it, just not as comfortably as Lawrenson expects.
