Liverpool are one of four English clubs “keeping close tabs” on Turkish goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, according to the player’s agent.

The 6’3″ stopper has been a mainstay for Trabzonspor this season, and his representative Engin Kirkpinar has claimed that the European champions are keen to snap him up.

As quoted by Turkish-Football.com, he said: “Liverpool are one of four English sides keeping close tabs on Ugurcan.

“Liverpool are among the sides interested in Cakir and have been monitoring his progress.

“Trabzonspor value Cakir as being worth a minimum €20m [£17.2m] and will not sell him in January.

“An end of season move could however, be on the cards.”

OPINION

This is a pretty bold claim for an agent to make if it isn’t true. Obviously, this could be a representative attempting to portray his client as more desirable than he actually might be, but the chances are that he is telling the truth. Cakir is an exciting prospect. At just 23, he has his whole career ahead of him, and is already averaging 3.6 saves per game this season, as per Whoscored. The Reds had to endure a spell without Alisson at the beginning of this season, and while Adrian did a marvellous job of covering for him, the Spaniard isn’t getting any younger, and a more sustainable long term covering option could be a smart move. Whether Cakir would be willing to play understudy to Alisson is another question entirely, of course, but certainly, if Liverpool can land him, it could only be a good thing.
