Liverpool have made a move to sign West Bromwich Albion wonderkid Jovan Malcolm by the end of December, according to Football Insider.

The reliable football outlet claim that the Reds are doing preliminary checks on Malcolm’s interest to join the club after learning that he doesn’t turn 17 until December.

Football Insider report that the door is open for clubs to get Malcolm for a cut-price compensation fee as West Brom cannot tie the young striker down to a professional deal until his 17th birthday.

OPINION

Liverpool could play a blinder by getting a deal pretty much all in place for the 16-year-old to sign upon his next birthday, as getting a highly-rated youngster at a cut-price fee is always a positive. Malcolm may not go onto fulfil his potential, so the Reds need to aim to spend as little as possible on getting him. However, it is worth noting that Football Insider state the Baggies forward is catching the eye of the Premier League elite and the Reds aren’t the only club keen on him, which means it may come down to who tables the best offer. Aside from the best offer being a potential deciding factor in the race for Malcolm, it may come down to which club he feels he has the best chance of breaking into the first-team at, and given the level of competition at Anfield, it might work against the Reds. The 16-year-old has scored seven goals as well as racked up three assists in his nine games for WBA’s U-18s this season, so clearly he could be a prolific young talent that may one day be the real deal in the Premier League.
