Premier League champions Manchester City have joined league leaders Liverpool in the hunt for West Bromwich Albion teenager Javon Malcolm, according to Football Insider.

The outlet claims that Pep Guardiola’s side want to have sealed the striker’s signature by the time he turns 17 next month, having been alerted by his performances this season.

However, the Reds will provide the champions with stiff competition, while fellow top flight heavyweights Manchester United and Arsenal are also in the hunt.

They have all made regular scouting checks on the 16-year-old, with the Baggies unable to tie him down on professional terms until he turns 17, giving the big guns an opportunity to steal in.

OPINION

It’s no surprise that multiple big teams are taking a look at Malcolm. He really came onto the Reds’ radar after scoring four times in West Brom Under-18s 6-3 victory over their Liverpool counterparts last weekend. It’s no shock that he made a healthy impression on them with that sort of display. Liverpool had to expect some opposition to their interest in Malcolm, if not from West Brom then from other big teams who want to capitalise on the same opportunity as Jurgen Klopp’s side. You wouldn’t be surprised if Malcolm’s head was turned, because he’s only a young lad and these are some of the biggest teams in Europe who are reportedly taking a look at him. Would you want to play for West Brom when you could perform at Anfield or The Etihad, instead? This is where his minders and his team come into things, because somebody needs to be looking out for his best interests, here. If that’s a switch to Liverpool then great, but if not then he should be allowed to stay at The Hawthorns or go wherever he wants.
