Ally McCoist has drooled over the atmosphere at Anfield, claiming that Liverpool’s home ground is “unbelievable”.

The talkSPORT host made the statement during a conversation with England rugby union coach Eddie Jones on Thursday.

Speaking on the station, Jones said: “The last [football] game I saw was that Champions League semi-final, Liverpool and Barcelona at Anfield.”

McCoist replied: “Unbelievable, eh? Incredible, wasn’t it?”

Jones then said: “The best sporting event I’ve been to.

“Just the atmosphere. The total emotion that ground has is incredible.”

OPINION

It’s hard to disagree with McCoist on this one. When Anfield is rocking, and when You’ll  Never Alone is being belted out by the Kop, especially on those magical European nights under the floodlights, there are few stadiums in world football that can match it for atmosphere. There seems to be a bit of a trend towards bashing Liverpool fans at the moment, perhaps suggesting that they only bother to make noise before kick off and at full time, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. They have the best side in the country, a manager who is up there with the best in the world, and are on the cusp of achieving something that will go down in history forever. Obviously, supporters are going to be riled up for that, and to suggest otherwise is, frankly, a little bit ludicrous. Anfield is special, and everybody knows it.
