Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is a “world class” player, according to BBC pundit Micah Richards.

The former Manchester City defender made the suggestion on BBC Radio 5 Live, but was met with some indignation from Chris Sutton, who seemed less certain of the England international’s credentials.

Richards said: “Henderson is world class, because of what he’s done and his consistency and whatnot.

“He’s won a European Cup, he’s been consistent over the past three or four years.”

Responding to that claim, Sutton retorted: “It’s a big statement to say he’s world class.”

OPINION

You sometimes have to feel for players like Henderson. Unlike some of his teammates, who score goals freely or contribute directly to towering clean sheets it can sometimes be hard to clearly see what he actually brings to a side, short of a tremendous work ethic. The truth is, however, is that that is the cornerstone of what makes him such a central player for club and country. Henderson is a galvaniser of those around him, and his irrepressible effort and natural leadership abilities make him a vital cog in the machine. There is no way that he would have lifted that Champions League for Jurgen Klopp’s side if he couldn’t cut the mustard, nor would he have 55 England caps to his name, as pointed out by Danny Mills on Monday. The simple fact of the matter is that he does the dirty work so that others around him don’t have to, and while that may not be the most eye-catching or impressive contribution, it is, nonetheless, and absolutely crucial one.
