Chelsea have joined Liverpool in pursuit of Genk midfielder Sander Berge, according to Goal.

The news outlet claims that Napoli are also interested in the 21-year-old Norway international, who looks set to leave Genk with him about to enter the final year and a half of his contract at the Belgian club.

It is understood that managerless Genk are yet to receive an offer for the defensive midfielder but the club’s sporting director Dimitri De Conde has revealed there is a lot of interest in him.

OPINION

Berge is an impressive young player who is only going to get better and better in the coming years if he gets to play for a big club under a top manager. There have been reports that Jurgen Klopp spoke to Berge after Liverpool’s most recent win against Genk in the Champions League group stages so the Liverpool boss does seem as though he has an eye for the former Valerenga midfielder. Liverpool could do with the added strength in depth in their midfield. Some of their options are either failing to live up to expectations or are expected to be moving on from the club next year. Adam Lallana and James Milner will both see their contracts expire at the end of the season unless new offers are tabled for them so Berge could be seen as a long-term replacement by Klopp. He shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg too due to his contract situation, which is good news for the Reds.
