Paul Robinson has praised Dejan Lovren for his performance in Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Manchester City on Sunday.

The 6’2″ Croatian was called upon to partner Virgil van Dijk in the heart of defence, and Robinson was suitably impressed with his display.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I think he was focused, he knew there was a tough task in hand and he stayed concentrated for the full 94, 95minutes, which sometimes isn’t always the case.

“As he’s always going to give you a chance, and normally there is a lapse in concentration but I think it was one of his better games in a Liverpool shirt.”

OPINION

Lovren has always had a bit of a reputation for being a calamitous defender on Merseyside, but ever since he was called upon to deputise for Joel Matip a few weeks ago, he has looked decidedly more solid than he has during previous spells in the starting XI at Anfield. Against City on Sunday he was brilliant once more, making five clearances and helping van Dijk to marshal that back line, as per Whoscored, but you could even argue that this was his least impressive performance of the campaign to date. That’s not to say that he was anything less than fantastic, but certainly, when you compare it to some of his other outings so far this term, such as his display against Leicester City that won him a Whoscored rating of 7.65, it’s clear that he still has a lot more in the tank. For Jurgen Klopp, that will pose a nice problem when Matip returns, and it’s good to see such strength in depth in defensive positions.
