Liverpool playmaker Xherdan Shaqiri will be placed on a bespoke, tailored, training regime soon, according to the Liverpool Echo.

The newspaper claims that the 80-cap Switzerland international has been hampered by a calf injury which has limited him to just four substitute appearances in all competitions this season [Source: Transfermarkt].

And when the time comes for his rehabilitation to kick into gear, the former Stoke City man will be placed on a personalised programme to aid his recovery.

The report claims that the 28-year-old will be given a chance to make an impact, and so the ball is in his court in regards to his Anfield career.

OPINION

This story comes hot on the heels of Football Insider reporting last week that Shaqiri has told friends that he wants to leave Liverpool at the end of the season. Obviously he’s had a tough time with getting regular game time this season due to injuries and other things, but he is still a quality player and – in theory – an important part of this Liverpool squad. He was absolutely pivotal around this time last year for the Reds, scoring a number of crucial goals, but you get the sense that Jurgen Klopp’s side may have moved beyond the diminutive Swiss star. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s recent resurgence is another spot in the midfield three that Shaqiri won’t be able to occupy, while there’s very little chance of him breaking into the attack either. Where, exactly, does he fit, then? Still, Liverpool have plenty of games coming up over the festive period and so they clearly expect him to come in and do a job once he’s back fit.
