Yaya Toure claimed that Manchester City should have been awarded a penalty during Sunday’s clash with Liverpool after the ball struck Trent Alexander-Arnold’s hand.

The former Manchester City midfielder suggested that Liverpool defender Alexander-Arnold’s hand touching the ball stopped it going to Raheem Sterling, so a spot-kick should have been awarded.

Toure revealed he told friends that the penalty wouldn’t be awarded as soon as he saw the incident as the game was against Liverpool at Anfield.

“When I was watching the Liverpool vs Manchester City game I was telling my friends ‘he’s not going to give a penalty against Trent Alexander-Arnold’ because it was Liverpool and Anfield and it is too difficult,” Toure told Sky Sports.

“I’ve experienced it myself and it is very difficult.

“When we talk about the game on Sunday, it was a clear penalty. If he doesn’t touch the ball it is going to Raheem and he can score. It’s complicated but we have to move forward.”

OPINION

It seems Toure is a full-fledged member of the conspiracy club, as he is basically saying Man City would have got a penalty if Sunday’s game hadn’t been at Anfield. It’s like suggesting that referees are scared of Liverpool fans turning hostile and that is just simply laughable. The only thing Toure says that makes any sense is that he claims Man City have to move on from Sunday’s 3-1 loss to the Reds and no one is going to argue with that. Complaining that a penalty should have been awarded in their favour is effectively like crying over spilt milk, as it isn’t like the decision is going to be overturned and the game replayed or anything like that. Liverpool currently sit top of the Premier League, nine points clear, and Man City will have absolutely no chance of closing the gap if they’re just going to be hung up on Sunday’s clash for weeks. While the chances of Pep Guardiola’s side winning the title look extremely slim, the Reds can’t afford to think they have the title in the bag as with it only being November, they need to keep churning out results.
