Guardiola: Mane sometimes dives

Next weekend’s top of the table clash between Liverpool and Manchester City promises to have to eyes around the world glued to it. After all, these are arguably the two best club sides in world football right now going toe-to-toe in a six-pointer that could have massive ramifications for the rest of the title race. And what’s better before an absolute crunch match than a little bit of aggro and mind games? The Premier League doesn’t see an awful lot of it these days, with managers and players alike tending to opt for a more sanitised media persona, or directing their anger at everybody’s favourite supervillain, VAR. So it’s almost refreshing to hear Pep Guardiola give a little bit of needle before the sides meet at Anfield next Sunday. Speaking after his team’s late 2-1 win over Southampton, the Spaniard suggested that Sadio Mane, who scored a 94th minute winner in their 2-1 win over Aston Villa, has a tendency to go down too easily, as reported by BBC Sport, quoted by Sky Sports News. Now, as it happens, Mane had been booked for simulation in that game, but it still feels a little out of place for Pep to make that kind of comment about a rival player in the week leading to a match against them, and, as many Liverpool fans pointed out on Twitter, his side are hardly innocent either, with both Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero being booked for diving in recent times. Still, all things considered, it should add a little extra spice to a match that is already threatening to be extra, extra hot.
