Liverpool do not need Zlatan

OPINION

For many Liverpool fans, you get the impression that a marquee signing would be preferred sooner rather than later.

After failing to make any senior outfield signings last summer, the Reds have been relatively starved of excitement in the transfer market, and while it may not have affected them on the pitch, a new addition in January would certainly be something to get supporters all riled up for the remainder of the season.

Not that the side necessarily needs it, of course. European champions, well-clear at the top of the Premier League, the Reds are flying.

And that’s largely down to carefully crafted squad that seems to thrive on camaraderie and togetherness.

As such, they must avoid signing Zlatan Ibrahimovic at all costs.

The charismatic Swede is on his way out of LA Galaxy, and according to Echo reporter Caoimhe O’Neill, he would be an ideal fit at Anfield.

When asked who the Reds should sign to improve their squad, he said: “Zlatan Ibrahimovic.  There I said it.

“The big Swede is currently a free agent after a stateside spell with LA Galaxy, and hear me out – but I think he could be the perfect fit for title-charging Liverpool.

“Divock Origi has been Jurgen Klopp’s super sub of late, and imagine the German also having this 6ft 5in vastly experienced centre-forward in his locker to back up Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino. It could be good.”

But Zlatan will only do what Zlatan wants to do, and the simple fact of the matter is that having a personality as big and unpredictable as his join a dressing room halfway through a season is an unnecessary gamble.

The Reds aren’t exactly short on goals either, and with Ibrahimovic very much in the twilight of his career, this is one that they should avoid at all costs.
