Former Republic of Ireland international Tony Cascarino has hit back at former Liverpool man Danny Murphy for claiming the Reds are on the brink of winning the Premier League title.

Murphy wrote in his Daily Mail column on Sunday that if Manchester City suffer another defeat and Liverpool win to take advantage of it then the title race is done and dusted. Cascarino, though, isn’t as optimistic.

“Danny Murphy’s talking about it, saying one more defeat for City, and Liverpool [win] it’s enough to win the title,” he said on talkSPORT. “It’s the first of December, there’s 24 games to go and there’s 72 points available.

“As a Liverpool fan I am no way accepting the title on December the first, thinking that we’ve done enough to get there. I will not accept that that is over the line. No way is this title done yet.”

OPINION

Obviously the Premier League title is a long way from being decided, but there’s no doubt that 11 points is a nice cushion. This is certainly an extraordinary gap at this stage of the season. It’s not often that a team are this far ahead at this point of the campaign, particularly ahead of a team as dominant as City. But Liverpool won’t be taking anything for granted, and Cascarino clearly isn’t either. Anybody who has even the slightest of associations with the Reds has been trained to look at things entirely pessimistically when it comes to the title race. They had a commanding lead around January/February time last season, yet it all fell apart down the stretch. So any right-minded Liverpool fan knows they’re a long way from being over the line. But there is a sense among pundits like Murphy that this is all but done. That’s not the case at all, as Cascarino spells out here.
