OPINION
The start to Liverpool’s crunch Champions League clash with Red Bull Salzburg was certainly something to behold. Both teams came out hot, going hammer and tong for much of the early going. Reds centre back Virgil van Dijk had to be alert right from the word go – something which isn’t always the case – and it earned him the appreciation of the Liverpool supporters at half time. The Dutchman twice had to almost single-handedly shut down dangerous Salzburg attacks early on, while he gave Erling Braut Haaland a good seeing to, much to the joy of the Liverpool fans. Jurgen Klopp likely would have preferred it to be a rather quieter start to the game, but he will know that he can always rely on his star centre half to keep things solid at the back. Van Dijk had to use every ounce of his world class ability to do that in the first half on Tuesday, though, that’s for sure.

It’s an obvious statement but Van Dijk is incredible. What a five minutes he’s put in.
