On Monday, The Athletic reported that Liverpool have stepped up their interest in signing RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, the latest development in a long-standing transfer link, with @LFCTransferRoom on Twitter sharing the update with followers.

The Athletic had claimed earlier this month [via TEAMtalk] that the Reds were due to commence talks with the 24-year-old about a possible move to Anfield, although the player last week questioned whether he would want to face a potential struggle for his place if he were to join the Premier League leaders (as per Sky Sports). He has been linked with a possible move to Liverpool since last summer, according to The Mirror.
Werner has excelled for RB Leipzig this season, scoring 27 times in 36 games and helping them to reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League. He has seven more goals to his name than Liverpool’s top scorer Mohamed Salah and more than twice as many as the 11 scored by the Reds’ most prolific centre-forward Roberto Firmino (as per TransferMarkt).
In the absence of football due to coronavirus-related postponements, these Liverpool fans on Twitter weren’t enthused by the latest report on the club’s apparent interest in Werner:

I’ll believe it when he’s holding a Liverpool shirt with his name on the back at Anfield alongside Jurgen Klopp
