A number of Liverpool fans have voiced their agreement with a suggestion from a key figure at another Premier League club on how best to conclude the current season.

Southampton chief executive Martin Semmens told BBC Radio Solent [via Liverpool Echo] that he would like to see the remaining top-flight fixtures being played behind closed doors if that’s what is required to complete the season by the end of June, following the implementation of social distancing restrictions. Liverpool-focused Twitter channel @AnfieldWatch shared his comments afterwards.

The 2019/20 Premier League is currently on hold due to the coronavirus crisis and, following a meeting last week, the football authorities are hopeful of a 30 April resumption at the earliest. Semmens argued that the resumption of the league would provide football fans with a timely morale boost amid challenging times, saying: “If people are home for another month and Premier League football is on the TV every day that can only be a good thing. Not because we are more essential than the NHS but because we can give people entertainment and show that we’re fighting back.” [BBC Radio Solent, via Liverpool Echo]

Liverpool currently lead the division by 25 points and need only two more wins to ensure a first league title in 30 years. Therefore, it didn’t seem wholly surprising that these Reds fans on Twitter approved of Semmens’ suggestion:

Liverpool fans, is Semmens right to call for the season to be finished behind closed doors if necessary? Have your say by commenting below!
