A number of Liverpool fans slammed former Reds player Joe Cole after he told the Daily Star that the current Premier League season should be restarted if it cannot be resumed by late July/early August (as per @AnfieldWatch on Twitter).

Jurgen Klopp’s team had established a 25-point lead in the top flight before the season was halted earlier this month due to the coronavirus crisis, with clubs hopeful of being able to resume on 30 April or later following a meeting last week. While key stakeholders appear keen to play out the remaining matches over the summer, Cole thinks the campaign so far may need to be scrapped if football cannot resume for another few months.

He told the Daily Star: “If we can’t finish the season, and it’s getting close to the following season, the only situation which I think is fair is to just restart it. Everyone’s tribal. Everyone wants what’s best for their clubs. But unless you do a blanket thing for everyone, it’s going to have knock-on effects. In my opinion, that’s the only solution. Restart from scratch if we cannot finish the league.”

As well as representing Liverpool, the 38-year-old also had two spells at West Ham during his playing career, with the Hammers’ co-chairperson Karren Brady also making calls for the 2019/20 season to be written off if it cannot be resumed.

These Liverpool fans on Twitter rounded on Cole over his comments, with one Kopite accusing him of being “bitter” after an underwhelming time at the club in which he scored just five times in 42 games:
