A number of Liverpool fans have voiced their anger and disgust at the conduct of an element of the club’s support towards Adrian following the goalkeeper’s costly error in last night’s Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid.
With the Reds leading 2-0 in extra time and on course to go through, the Spaniard sent a clearance straight to Joao Felix, who played the ball to Marcos Llorente as he ran on to fire a shot past the Liverpool ‘keeper and into the net to swing the tie in the visitors’ favour before they eventually ran out 3-3-2 winners. As noted by Sporting Excitement, some Reds supporters directed vicious abuse towards the 33-year-old on social media following that mistake, which came a week after a goal-causing error in an FA Cup defeat to Chelsea. It is not the first time that an element of Liverpool fans have vilified a goalkeeper for mistakes on the European stage, with Loris Karius being sent death threats after his two errors in the 2018 Champions League final.
These Liverpool supporters on Twitter condemned the abuse of Adrian and voiced their backing for the goalkeeper after his difficult night:
We have to stop the abuse on Adrian. He did let us down today. But there’s no reason for this much hate

Do anything, but please don't tag Adrian in your abuse.
Yes, he was below the standard today. Yes, we need to upgrade.
But remember how you loved him in the start of the season.
Criticism is fine. He doesn't deserve the abuse though.#YNWA

I think Adrian knows he messed up today. We all know. You don’t however need to send him abuse on social media. Be better.
