A number of Liverpool fans have voiced their agreement with a claim from the club’s former striker Michael Owen that the Reds remain the best team in Europe despite relinquishing their Champions League crown last night.

The 4-2 aggregate defeat to Atletico Madrid means that Jurgen Klopp’s side won’t win back-to-back European Cups but, with Liverpool 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League having dropped only five points from a possible 87, Owen still feels that they are the best club side in Europe right now.

As per the Liverpool Echo (and @AnfieldEdition on Twitter), he said on BT Sport: “There’s no question whatsoever that every single big team around Europe has just breathed a huge sigh of relief, Liverpool are out, and I’ve got no doubts that they are the best team in Europe at the moment.

“Yes, they’ve been beaten over two legs but they are still the best team in Europe and they were absolutely outstanding for 90 minutes. As Rio [Ferdinand] said, the difference between the two sides was the goalkeepers.”

Liverpool had 34 shots against Atletico Madrid last night and took the match to extra time following their first leg defeat but an error from goalkeeper Adrian turned the tie in the Spanish team’s favour, while visiting ‘keeper Jan Oblak excelled with nine saves.

Owen scored 158 goals for the Reds between 1997 and 2004 but dented his reputation among some Liverpool fans following his move to rivals Manchester United in 2009 (as per Liverpool Echo). However, these Reds supporters on Twitter fully agreed with his comments after the defeat to Atletico Madrid:

Liverpool fans, was Owen right to describe the Reds as the best team in Europe despite last night’s disappointment? Have your say by commenting below!
