In an interview with Spanish publication La Razon, Liverpool midfielder Pedro Chirivella said that he has asked Jurgen Klopp if he can play with the Reds’ under-23 side to maintain match fitness, with his contract at Anfield set to expire in the summer (as per @AnfieldEdition on Twitter).

The 22-year-old Spaniard first came to Merseyside in 2013 but has had multiple loan spells away from Liverpool and has made a paltry 11 first team appearances in that time, six of which have come this season (all in FA Cup or Carabao Cup games). His only Premier League outing remains a 3-1 defeat to Swansea nearly four years ago.

According to La Razon, Chirivella is currently negotiating with the club about a possible contract renewal, although the media outlet claimed that his future could instead lie in his native country. His performance against Everton in the FA Cup in January was lauded by plenty of Liverpool fans on a day when he recorded 75 passes, played six accurate long balls and put in eight crosses (as per WhoScored).

These Reds fans on Twitter gave their backing to the Spaniard, with some hoping that the “unbelievable professional” will be given a new deal at Anfield after his request to keep match-fit by playing with the under-23s:

Do you think Chirivella has a future at Liverpool or does it seem inevitable that he will leave in the summer? Comment below with your views!
