A number of Liverpool fans have hit out at Sam Allardyce after he called for the current Premier League season to be scrapped amid the coronavirus crisis.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, the former Everton manager admitted that such a drastic course of action would be “very sad” for teams such as the Reds, who are just two wins away from ending a 30-year title drought, but insisted that people’s health must take precedence over football. In comments that were relayed in part on Twitter by @AnfieldWatch, he said: “I don’t know how you can finish a season with everything that’s going on in terms of the NHS, how strained it is, and everybody needing to stay safe in their own homes”. He added: “It’ll be very sad for a lot of teams. In the Premier League, there’s Liverpool, who have had such a fantastic season but lives matter and nothing takes precedence over that.”

Allardyce is far from the first public figure to advocate a permanent cancellation of the 2019/20 Premier League season. West Ham co-chairperson Karren Brady, TV personality Piers Morgan, ex-Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand and even former Liverpool player Joe Cole have all suggested that the current campaign should be voided if it cannot be realistically concluded over the summer, with the season on hold until 30 April at the earliest.

Not surprisingly, these Liverpool fans on Twitter were angered by the ex-Everton manager’s calls for the season to be scrapped if it cannot be completed:

Liverpool fans, what did you make of Allardyce’s suggestion to cancel the 2019/20 season if it can’t be finished? Have your say by commenting below!
