A number of Liverpool fans have hit out at the Premier League’s all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer after he said that the Reds shouldn’t be named champions if the season is not completed, a notion that one Kopite dismissed as “mad rubbish“.
With top-flight football currently on hold due to the coronavirus crisis, there is the possibility of an incomplete season if the pandemic doesn’t subside in the foreseeable future, with Premier League clubs due to meet on Thursday to discuss what should happen with the remaining fixtures for 2019/20.
Writing in his newspaper column [via The Mirror], the ex-England striker said: “If, and it is a huge if, the season cannot be completed then there is no way you can have a winner or loser. If you cannot complete the fixtures then you cannot go handing out titles or consider relegating anybody.
He added: “For Liverpool, it would be incredibly harsh. They only need six points to wrap it up but they haven’t got them yet so for that reason it has to be declared null and void. It would be very different if the season was suspended after they had got the points to win it.” His comments were subsequently shared by Twitter channel @AnfieldEdition to its followers.

Liverpool currently sit 25 points clear at the top of the Premier League, having dropped only five points from a possible 87, and would guarantee a first league title since 1990 if they win two of their remaining nine matches. Therefore, it would no doubt be incredibly galling if they were to be denied a probable chance at history if the season is declared null and void.
